Posted on Categories queerguru.tvLabels , , , ,

The Mathis are a remarkable family whose courage and determination rarely faltered when they supported their youngest child Coy who started transitioning from male to female in kindergarten after it was clear that Coy felt he was a girl.  Growing Up Coy documents the family’s fight for her right to use the girls’ bathroom in a landmark civil rights case that prompted a nationwide debate.

On the eve of the movie being released for global streaming to over 190 countries on Netflix (it is already available on Itunes) director Eric Juhola talked to queerguru at PTV via Facetime about just how important Coy Mathis’s touching story really is.

The Lure of Provincetown : a new Exhibit

Posted on Categories queerguru.tvLabels , , , , ,

South Florida has always been a home from home for many LGBT residents of Provincetown who like to swap the sometimes brutal winters for the sunshine state. Now The Stonewall National Museum & Archives in Wilton Manors has a new exhibition called The Lure of Provincetown
that takes a look at the history of why people still flock back every summer without fail.

Featuring photographs by the late Al Kaplan, who arrived in P Town in 1961 aged 18 and for the next five years recorded the community that he was at the center of. Midge Battelle’s photographs are from the 1990’s when she recorded the annual Dyke Drag Brunch that takes place during P Town’s Womensweek. They are joined by art from Len Paoletti who before he retired to Fort Lauderdale ran a couple of P Town guest houses whilst practicing his art.  Paoletti is best known for his canvasses on scenes at the Boatslip Tea-Dances which have a distinct 1980’s feel to them.

queerguru P.T.V’s roving reporter who winters in Miami Beach caught up with Chris Rudisill, Stonewall Museum’s Executive director to get the low-down on why he thinks there is such a bond between the two towns.

queerguru reviews Moonlight

moonlight-poster-2

Moonlight is probably the most exquisite and understated LGBT coming-of-age story to hit our screens for years. Light on plot and even sparse on dialogue, it nevertheless packs a powerful punch showing the inner turmoil of an African/American youth coming to terms with his own sexuality as he grows up in one of the tougher aggressively machismo neighborhoods of Miami.

It has been wowing audiences up and down the country …. even the NY Times has declared it ‘one of the best movies of 2106’ …… and accolades do not get much higher than that.  Here on the eve of it’s screening at the Waters Edge Cinema in P.Town is queerguru’s own review filmed for P.T.V.
