Actor turned filmmaker Brian J Smith’s debut behind the camera is his love letter to Fire Island The place is evocative to so many queers around the world. The narrow ten square miles sand bar of 600 beach houses, a hundred co-ops, a beautiful beach, wooden boardwalks, no roads or cars, and a handful of commercial businesses is 49 miles off the coast of New York City in Long Island Sound. It’s played host to generations of queer New Yorkers looking for community, sex, sea, drugs, gorgeous wooden beach houses, nudity, hedonism and a dancefloor.
Smith carefully takes off his rose colored glasses to look at Fire Island’s past and to think ahead about its future. Kit Williamson and John Halbach the devilishly handsome and talented married couple were in Miami at OUTshine Film Festival to collect yet another Award (The Vanguard) to add to their vast collection for their critically acclaimed hit #LGBT web series EastSiders. So we seized the opportunity to chat with the charming duo whilst they were in town.
WWE star wrestler Fred Rosser caused quite a stir when he came out as gay in 2013, since then he has continued wrestling and also has become an activist, rolemodel and advocate non-profit BURN THE HATE for which he was given Miami’s OUTshine Film Festival VANGUARD AWARD and also the Keys To The City. When Guatemalan filmmaker Jayro Bustamante‘s went to cast his sophomore film a drama about a married man who comes out as gay he was shocked to discover that over 80% of the actors at the casting would not play ‘gay’ . He needn’t have worried though as he chose the extremely talented actor JUAN PABLO OLYSLAGER whose finely nuanced performance as the lead character makes this very disturbing drama so utterly watchable.
In what is the 2nd Guatemalan movie to every have an LGBT story line, Olyslager Pablo who is forced by his Church & family to give up on his chance of real happiness.
