Orlando Soria is an interior designer, writer, visual artist, and now star of HGTV’s new hit show BUILD ME UP where he helps people redesign their living spaces after they have had a major life change. He’s a disarmingly charming man who brings such a sense of joy and humor into his work which all his clients love, including Olympic champion and heartthrob Gus Kenworthy. (we should add also that if you haven’t noticed yet, Orando is hardly heavy on the eyes)
.Orlando took time off from working with his latest client to talk with QUEERGURU so we could find out why he is so passionate about his work …..and his life too
Unassuming Matt Mahmood-Ogston is an unlikely LGBTQ hero, and even though he may deny it, he is exactly that. He turned the tragic death of his long-time fiance Dr Naz Mahmood into creating the Naz-Matt Foundation to stop religious homophobe.
Three days after 34 year old Naz had told his Muslim parents he was gay, their reactions were so severe and threatening, that he actually took his own life.
In the midst of his grief, when he confesses all he could think of initially was of joining Naz, Matt was inspired to start the Foundation. He wanted to help ensure that no gay person should ever be persecuted by their family for whatever religious beliefs they held.
On the eve of the Foundations new short film “My God Im Queer’ being screened at the Iris Prize Festival, Queerguru took the opportunity to talk with Matt about his own life’s journey and that of the Foundation. It is impossible not to be moved by him, and also be grateful for the essential work that he is spearheading
Founded in 1988, NewFest is New York’s largest presenter of LGBTQ+ film & media and its 32nd edition will take place October 16-27, 2020, with the majority of the 120+ new films accessible online to ticket holders NATIONWIDE in the US. There are also Special events include a Queer Trivia Night hosted by Rupaul’s Drag Race alum Jackie Cox; a Virtual Dance Party in partnership with House of Yes to close out My Girl Friday, a selection of films by and about women, women-identifying, and non-binary members of the queer community; as well as the previously announced all trans live reading of BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN to celebrate the film’s 15th anniversary. All Panels will stream for free on NewFest’s YouTube and Facebook channels.
As usual the Queerguru Team have gone through the entire schedule for TOP PICKS OF FILMS NOT TO MISS. Some of these are favorites we have covered before from the Festival circuit, but we have also included some stunning new ones too.
