The respected war journalist and Oscar nominated filmmaker Sebastian Junger told queerguru that war is both futile and necessary. In a discussion about his latest powerful documentary Hell on Earth : The Fall of Syria & The Rise of Syria he talks about the devastating death and destruction and particularly on all the global consequences of this pernicious civil war.
‘America always has been a country that has welcomed the desperate of the the world with open arms, and suddenly there is this idea that we won’t do that. This country has never been attacked by a war refugee, that’s just not where the threat is . I hope people see this film and realize that w should espouse a certain openness with the world where people can seek refuge here.’
The interview was filmed in Provincetown by Hussein Wentz during #PIFF2017 for ‘queerguru reports’ on PTV’s Channel 99.
Queerguru talks with Casey Clark, Chris Danuser & Trenesa Danuser about their new short film Pap’s Manifesto. It’s the story of a widowed Gold Star Father, hell-bent on avenging his son’s death by truck bombing a mosque, who struggles to complete his mission after he discovers his granddaughter hidden in his explosives.
SUMMER SOLSTICE: is a story of non-binary unrequited love Written and directed by queer, non-binary film-maker Noah Schamus, it’s based on their own experiences of the shifting dynamics of friendships post-coming out. It’s also an interesting analysis of unrequited love and how college friendships mature once we are in our late twenties. This film is both refreshing and mature in that the queer trans narrative threads throughout the film, but doesn’t dominate. The likable characters have the right balance of confidence and self-doubt true to most twenty-somethings. Strong casting means all the performances are great – in particular a very funny bad sex scene.
When the film had its World Premiere at Provincetown Film Festival Schanus and their partner/producer Arno Makros and co-producer Jesse Miller sat down and talked about the film with QUEERGURU
It’s the 21st Edition of Provincetown Film Society & Festival and as usual there is an excellent selection of #LGBTQ films in their diverse program . QUEERGURU has been through them all and here is our take on the Fest’s queer element
Filmmaker Norah Shapiro talked to queerguru about her wonderfully uplifting documentary Time For Ilhan that is the story of an extraordinary Somali woman Ilhan Omar who, against seemingly insurmountable odds, was elected to the Minnesota State Legislature (Interestingly enough her campaign staff was packed full of gay men & women)
