Next year will mark the 10th anniversary of same-sex marriages becoming legalized across the U.S. and whilst most of us cheered wildly (this writer became one of the early new ‘husbands) it actually gave some gay men severe night sweats. Like filmmaker David Scala.
Although he was in a healthy, happy longterm relationship, he found himself dismissing the idea of marriage any time a friend brought it up. I was blissfully unaware that not all gay men thought that marriage was the be and end of all, but Scala’s personal fears manifested into a new short film.
In ENGAGED he funneled all of his uneasy emotions and insecurities into a thoughtful and often funny story that may not reflect our own chosen path but we will admit to one we can understand .
Winning the right to marry was a major achievement but it was never meant to be compulsory for every gay man (or woman). Or was it? lol
