Queerguru’s Jose Mayorga reviews Sebastian Silva’s darkly funny ROTTING IN THE SUN

A depressed movie director (Sebastián Silva as himself) in search of relaxation and inspiration goes to a Mexican gay beach where he meets social media influencer and popular Jordan (Jordan Firstman as himself),  whom he invites to spend a few days in his Mexico City apartment. There they will enjoy each other´s company and maybe, develop a visual project since the troubled director is also having financial struggles.

At his apartment in Colonia Roma, the director has the help of Señora Vero ( Catalina Saavedra ) and while making the arrangements for the guest to be more comfortable, there is an incident that changes the plans for everybody.  This dark comedy, mystery suspense drama captures the viewer´s attention, for one reason or another, from the beginning.  The movie also shows a little of the transformation the neighborhood is into, due to the demand of Airbnb locations in the area.  The film also shows, acidly, behaviors and attitudes that are part of our contemporary daily life.

Chance plays an important part in the plot. A smart screenplay provides credibility to the situations the protagonists are immersed in, against their will. Twists and turns take us into traumas, feelings of guilt and fear,  unsaid things, and a disclosure end.

Enigmatic Chilean actress Catalina Saavedra as a Mexican housekeeper catches your eye and steals the show.  She has been nominated today as best supporting performance at the Independent Spirit Awards where the film has also been nominated for Editing,  and for John Cassavetes Award at the Independent Spirit Award 2024.

You may watch the film in streaming services such as Mubi.
