Boris Johnson the right-wing heterosexual Mayor of London wants the Brit LGBT community to support the campaign for Britain to leave the European Community once and for all. The motive for the country to want to completely isolate itself again is meant to be mainly for economic reasons, but it has a lot more to do with the inbred xenophobia that has been even more inflamed this week with the bombings in Brussels.
Johnson’s appeal is based on his claim that the UK has the best LGBT rights in the world (he evidently hasn’t spoken to any gay people in Ulster recently). Whilst we accept that that are very good, they are certainly not the best. More importantly what Johnson conveniently forgets to mention is that the European Union has been a positive force for UK LGBT rights, especially with regards to decriminalizing same-sex consensual activity, barring discrimination against transgender individuals in employment, equalizing the age of consent, enabling LGB people to serve openly in the military, allowing transgender people the right to marry, employment equality and the including pension right for transgender individuals.
Is Johnson just yet another ‘straight’ man who knows what’s best for our community (!) or simply a politician with a convenient memory problem?
