Whilst most people are still despondent that the recent UK Referendum on BREXIT turned the clock back to the bad old days in British politics, there is at least some positive news that things are actually moving forward with the new Prime Minister selecting her new Team . When it comes to LGBT rights Theresa May has a tough act to follow as her predecessor David Cameron was after all responsible for getting the Bill to legalize same sex marriage through the UK Parliament. As the dust settles on the reshuffling of her Cabinet and Front Bench after taking power, although her top team appears broadly more conservative on LGBT rights, it also does also include a number of out politicians.
They include David Mundell who remains as Scottish Secretary, while Justine Greening is promoted to Education Secretary and Equalities Minister. Both Mr Mundell and Ms Greening came out earlier this year. Sir Alan Duncan – who was the first out Tory MP – returns to government as Minister of State at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. Margot James, who in 2010 was the party’s first out lesbian member of Parliament, was appointed as a Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy. Nick Gibb, was re-appointed as Minister of State at the Department for Education.
As it happens Prime Minister May had a wide pool to choose from as at the last count there are now 35 Out MP’s in the U.K. Parliament : the highest number in the world .
