Recently uploaded to YouTube is this wee gem of a video of Leigh Bowery shooting a shopping segment for the UK BBC TV’s ‘The Clothes Show’ in 1988. Bowery was a London-based performance artist, club promoter, and designer who created the legendary club Taboo which became the hang out of London’s alternative ‘artists’. Taboo was really ahead of it’s own time and was known for defying sexual convention, for embracing “polysexualism”, for its wild atmosphere, and for its sometimes unexpected song selections. It was immortalized in the musical play written by Boy George which was a big bit in London and a total flop in N.Y.
