The late and very great Kenneth Williams was a much loved British comic actor and comedian who was a mainstay of the classic ‘Carry On’ movies in the 1960’s and 1970’s. A wickedly funny and articulate man who was probably like the U.K.’s own Charles Nelson Reilly. Although he was as camp as a row of tents, Williams was always cast as in movies as a womaniser (!), and claimed he was celibate all his life. Yet in his diaries published posthumously contained references to unconsummated or barely consummated homosexual dalliances, which he describes as “traditional matters” or “tradiola”.
This Turn Back Time clip is from 1983 when Williams was at his very funniest…..i.e. talking about himself in front of a celebrity audience, most of whom are now not recognizable by any one other than older Brits (!) but that is irrelevant as an hilarious Williams is really on top of his form.
P.S. In 2006 the BBC made a rather splendid fictionalized account of William’s life called Fantabulosa (click on link for our review) for which Michael Sheen was nominated for a BAFTA (British Oscar). The movie is now available free on YouTube.
