Women finally taking over Late Night

One of the last bastions of men is finally seeing women move in and take over.  Late night TV Chat Shows have always been hosted by men : when Johnny Carson went on vacation he would sometimes have the fabulously funny Joan Rivers sit in his famous chair   Carson famously fell out with Rivers when she started her own last night show fir Fix without telling him.  It didn’t help her program which turned out to be short lived anyway.

Now some 50 years later Johnny Carson’s old network NBC has announced that not only is the Late Late Show to be hosted by a woman, but she is a queer Indian/Canadian to boot. Lily Singh is one of the most successful and lucrative YouTube stars ever . Known as IISuperwomanII, Singh has amassed more than 14 million subscribers on her channel. She’s also a New York Times bestselling author, and an actress who  starred in the YouTube documentary “A Trip to Unicorn Island.”

An articulate and hilariously funny woman  Singh will als act as Executive Producer  “A Little Late with Lilly Singh”  when it  launches in September.

Meanwhile two-time Oscar winner  Emma Thompson is about to hit the big screen as New York talk-show host, the brittle and British Katherine Newbury, who’s been doing her late-night show for 28 years and has gotten herself into a rut so deep and wide that the rut is all she can see.  The movie is written by comedian/actress Mindy Kaling who also co-stars., and directed by Nisha Ganatra (Chutney Popcorn).

Late Night is a feminine driven workplace comedy that will be in US movie theaters in June  and it can only raise the bar for even more women  taking our TV’s over in the wee hours .
