At Queerguru we take celebrating Official Holidays and/or Annual Named Days very seriously, so we are kind of miffed that we missed INTERNATIONAL BATH DAY last week.
Legend has it that on June 14th, Greek mathematician, scientist, and scholar, Archimedes, discovered while taking a bath that an object’s volume could be accurately measured by being submerged in water! Unable to contain his excitement over this discovery, Archimedes leaped out of the bathtub and yelled, “Eureka, Eureka!” as he ran through the streets of Syracuse, Greece. Since the exact date of Archimedes’ birth was unknown, the day chosen to commemorate is the day that is believed he kept out of the bathtub….June 14th.
The oldest bathtub ever found was discovered in Knossos, Greece in the Queen’s bathroom. This bathtub dates back over 3,500 years ago. Then in The Middle Ages, the very first production of soap began in the Roman Empire, and it was made of lard. In 1546 King Henry V111 had all public bathrooms shut down at the outbreak of The Plague. Still in the UK ….. in 1767 William Feetham invented the first modern shower,
We are told that the annual International Bath Day is a time to relax, reflect and learn. It also highlights the need to make time and room for solitude with a soothing bath. It may help reconfigure our brains and think out of the box. That is what we all need to be to become the next Archimedes and have our very own “Eureka!” moment.
BUT if that’s not enough also on the same day we are expected to celebrate:
PS Don’t worry if like us you missed out as evidently on October 7th there is National Bathtub Day. The difference? We have no idea, but if you need an excuse to share your bath …….
