Even in these troubled times, you can still expect the LGBTQ community to get creative to help us get through this current pandemic with a smile on our faces.
As all the Bars and Clubs are temporarily shuttered some of the talented acts that perform in them are now bringing their shows into our own homes, and we for one are very grateful. Thanks to the power of internet we can enjoy wonderful queer acts from across the globe that are new to us, and also revisit some our favorites too.
March 31st was the world premiere of Velvet Variety, a new streaming variety show from New York. The 20-minute queer comedy compilation is a blend of stand-up clips, characters, drag, music from some of NY’s finest . Highlights of the first episode hosted by Drew Tessier includes a headline set from trans stand-up comedian Jaye McBride, and a clip featuring Shea Couleé from Season 9 of Ru Paul’s Drag Race.
Velvet Variety also offers us a way of giving back to support these self-employed artists who have had their paying gigs cancelled for the foreseeable future. Each performer’s Venmo handle is prominently featured, so viewers can tip them directly, and their social media handles (likes and follows are free!).
Meanwhile across the Pond in London’s legendary Royal Vauxhall Tavern which has been a gay bar since WW2, for sometime now Queer Tuesday night has been run by Bar Wotever. They are a collective of some of the best LGBT & Queer Performers in London, UK and the World, who are particularly encouraging newcomers and beginners with great attitude and things to say to join their Open Mic spots.
There is a rawness and dynamic energy to this very diverse group that may lack sophistication but who always leave each audience begging for more.
Now in hiatus like the rest of the world this is their 2nd online show which can be viewed globally via Vimeo . It features Loxx Blaxx , Jordan Charles , Shakona Fire , Smashlyn Monroe and Seymour Stainz . If you like it as much we do you can make a donation to www.paypal.me/woteverworld.
Also the Bar Wotever gang would love it if you could help The Outside Project fund for Homeless LGBTIQ+ peeps. goldengiving.com/wall/the-outside-project
