Queerguru’s Peter Minkoff gives us his Camping Tips for Gay Couples

Gays and camping are not something you hear together often, besides when talking about Brokeback Mountain. However, outdoorsy couples can have a blast in nature, especially if they know how to prepare for their nature trip and pack well. If you want to get out and connect with Mother Earth and your beloved partner, here are a few camping trips for gays to remember.

A comfy tent

Here’s the deal, it’s safe to say that you’re not going to spend your nights sleeping in a hammock, especially if this is your first time camping. It might sound romantic to spend the night sleeping in your partner’s arms and looking at the stars, but that’s not what nature is usually like after sunset. The temperatures get cold, animals get out and it gets very creepy. So a tent is a must for beginner campers. Often, the best size is something that can fit you and your partner in one room and have enough space for your gear. Make sure your tent is easy to pitch and take apart because you don’t want to spend your first and last day arguing over how to get everything together. Igloo-type tents are usually very easy to put together and take apart.

Warm sleeping bags

The nights in nature can get very cold even after a hot and sunny day, so it’s crucial to have warm sleeping bags to snuggle up in. Many people find sleeping bags restricting, but they are truly necessary if you want to stay warm, dry and comfortable. Today, sleeping bags come in countless styles and sizes, with even those made for couples. Depending on the weather, temperatures and outdoor conditions, usually people are satisfied with weather and insect-proof sleeping bags. Combined with a sleeping mat, you can have great comfort and safety.

A few pocket necessities

Once you have the basics like your tent, sleeping bags and some warm clothes (this last item is just common sense) it’s time to add a few smaller necessities to your packing list. When out in the wild, you will greatly rely on your switch blade knife for setting up camp, cooking, fixing things, and even first aid and protection. Always have a knife up your belt for easy and quick access. Next, you’re going to need a few navigation tools if you’re going deeper into the wild. A compass, a map and a whistle will come in handy in case you get lost. Also, don’t forget lighting. Flashlights and lanterns are a must if you want to have an enjoyable night and feel safe and protected. Of course, you’re going to have your fire on (pack a fire starter kit) but a flashlight is very handy to bright with you.

Food and drinks

In your everyday life, you’re probably not even concerned about water and food, but in the wild, you need to plan your meals carefully. There’s no takeout or restaurant around, so you’ll have to rely on your cooking skills to survive. A small camping stove and a few pots and pans are all you need to prepare tasty and nutritious meals outside. Pack plenty of canned and dried foods you can turn into fast meals. And don’t forget nutritious snacks like nuts, dried fruits and granola bars to replenish your energy between meals. When it comes to water, bring plenty for drinking and cooking—you might not have any access to water in the wild.

Safety features

Unfortunately, safety is a big concern for gay couples and while camping, we have to be double conscious about things around us. Camping gay couples have to be mindful of regular dangers lurking in nature as well as homophobes looking to ruin our camping trips. Therefore, be sure to pack a few safety features like bear mace (useful on dangerous animals and humans), a knife, a first aid kit and some flares. Do your research on the country’s LGBTQ laws if you’re camping abroad.

Camping can be a great activity that will bring you and your partner closer together. If you prepare well, this can be your new favorite activity to enjoy as a gay couple.
