queerguru goes to Miami’s Gay8 Festival

Last Sunday saw the 2nd Annual Gay8 Festival which is a free Latino LGBT art, music and food street festival in the heart of Miami’s historic Little Havana district.  The city has a well-deserved long-held reputation for being a multi-cultural and diverse community with a significant LGBT population which has always played an important role in this part of South Florida.

This new one-day very casual event became an instant success with both the LGBT community and the mostly Cuban community that inhabit the neighborhood that borders Calle Oche (Eighth Street).  So much so that as the latin music pumped out in full volume at the ad-hoc street salsa competition, next door the old local men carried on regardless with their fiercely competitive domino games that they are embroiled in every day of the week.  Even the police had special rainbow caps made for the occasion.

The fusion of LGBT and latino cultures makes for a perfect combination and as Gay 8 shows, literally anything goes, particularly if it is to a salsa beat. Check out the video below when the go-go boy shares the applause with an impromptu performance from a drag queen.
