Museum Bums: A Cheeky Look at Butts in Art …’Its All About The Base!”

It appears that we don’t all the have same reasons for visiting galleries and museums. For  Mark Small and Jack Shoulder is all about checking butts.   Not those of other visitors (!) but all the ones on statutes or in a work of art.   So much so they have a Twitter account called #MusuemButts.  It’s a  hobby that they are well-qualified for as they are both heritage scholars and art educators, so it was fairly obvious they would share both their passion and knowledge in a book.

Their allows you to marvel at various bums from the comfort of your own sofa. It contains  270 tasteful and occasionally cheeky images featuring the finest rear ends, starting from  Hieronymus Bosch and the Roman cult of Antinous to Herbert List’s sexy photos dating from the 30s.

Naturally, they are not the first people to get a fixation on butts like this.  Jo Killeya a Curator at The Yorkshire Museum in the UK  claims. “butts are universal in their interest“.  During the pandemic,  as museums struggled to stay open they launched ‘Best Museum Bums’ asking museums across the world to peruse their collections for the best butts, bottoms, and behinds on display.

We felt it was really important to keep our social media presence up, to give people an opportunity to see it behind the scenes while we’re closed,” Killeya said.

The curator battle was a great success and great fun and actually allowed us to look at bums of all shapes and sizes from over the ages (without feeling the least bit pervy) ….. we shall never go to a museum again without searching for a very bums.  Here are. a few of Queerguru’s favs “
