It’s Beginning To Look a Lot Like Christmas : music picks by Allison Ananis

“Sam has the kind of voice that can seamlessly fly across any sonic landscape. It opens up so much room in the studio” – this is how singer and songwriter Samantha Farrell has been described by her music producer and I could not agree more. I went to undergrad with Sam at Bowdoin College and was blown away by her talent back then -and now – listening to her new single “At the Edge of the World,” I still share the same sentiment. Her voice is so beautifully unique- hints of SIA and Norah Jones if you intently listen. The lyrics to the song could not be more appropriate or relatable as we approach almost a year of fighting the pandemic and isolation from the world. Do yourselves a favor and take a listen to this musical genius!

Grammy award winner and country star Kacey Musgraves and Australian singer and songwriter Troye Sivan released their new song called “Easy” in which the two musicians embark together on a journey through the darker, grittier side of Nashville. The video, which has a vintage ’80s vibe, begins with both Musgraves and Sivan in an old motel, followed by glimpses of their nighttime escapades — including Sivan’s mullet, a denim-clad hoe down, and a dimly lit bar with red and green glow where Musgraves seductively dances for her suitors. “Kacey and I are sort of like runaways,” Sivan told Vogue in an interview about the video’s concept. “We’ve separately had our own experiences…regrets, scorning our lovers…and we find solace in each other.”

“California Christmas” by the fabulous Deven Green is a melancholy musical journey (as she describes it) shot during the fires in Palm Springs. The lyrics are hauntingly beautiful “California Christmas- It’s just the best time of the year- I may be down and broke- But I’ve still got hope for a new next year.” I think I can speak for everyone in that we all hope for a brighter 2021.

Power couple Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello released their rendition of “The Christmas Song” earlier this week and it had me in tears. I do not think either one of them could get any more beautiful but aside from that – their brand-new golden retriever puppy, Tarzan, made a debut to complete their perfect little family and holiday home video.
