Herbert Tobias was a German photographer who first became well-known for his stunning fashion photography during the 1950s. He led a very colorful life as an openly gay man in Paris and Berlin, and by all accounts was always just one step ahead of the Law. In later years he also became equally well-known for his homoerotic pictures of men which met with both critical and commercial acclaim, until he untimely death from AIDS in 1982.
The importance of his body of work was eventually recognized by the City of Hamburg belatedly in 2007 when his grave was declared an Ehrengrab (“grave of honour”) by the Senate.
