The Australian TV & Film writer Tony McNamara seems to be developing a passion for writing about Mad Monarchs. He co-wrote the screenplay of The Favourite with Olivia Colman picking up a Best Actress Oscar for playing crazy Queen Anne. McNamara was nominated for both an Oscar and Golden Golden Globe for his troubles.
Now he has set his sights on Catherine the Great . the longest running female leader in Russian history and legend has, was one of the maddest. However the fact that allegedly she had some 22 lovers through her life, right up to her old age, seems reasonably sane to is.
McNamara has penned this satirical comedic drama called The Great that follows the unlikely rise of Catherine the Nothing to Catherine the Great. It focuses on this spectacular reign of this feminist trailblazer through 18th Century Russia.
This highly anticipated HULU TV series stars Elle Fanning as Catherine and she is joined by Nicholas Hoult as Peter III of Russia plus Phoebe Fox, Adam Godley, Gwilym Lee, Charity Wakefield, Douglas Hodge and Sacha Dhawan.
