Fairy Tales for Lovers & Fighters

In a perfect world queerguru would jetting around the globe to a different film festival every week, and one very high on our priorities would be the Fairy Tales Queer Film Festival up in Calgary, Alberta.  About to have its 19th Edition they strive to celebrate local and national queer artists and share diverse stories based in film. As well as providing a safe and respectful venue for members of all communities to celebrate queer culture across the LGBTTQA spectrum, they also make a point of including those who subscribe to culturally, politically, artistically, and otherwise alternative and innovative ways of contributing to society.

From their wonderful eclectic program we have chosen our three favorite must-see films.

Kings, Queens & In-Betweens : This very exuberant and enthralling documentary which portrays a rather charming hotch-potch troupe of drag performers is full of very pleasant surprises. Firstly that it is all set in the heart of the mid-west in Columbus Ohio, and secondly the arrange of talent is remarkably good, but most importantly, it is the exceptional sense of how this tight-knit diverse LGBTQ community has bonded together.

Tom of Finland : a new documentary on the Finnish artist Touko Laaksonen whose homoerotic drawings of very muscular and masculine men inspired and liberated a whole generation of gay men who were dealing with persecution and rampant homophobia at the time.  It is a testament to his work that over five decades later, his art is as one of the major gay artists of the 20th Century is as popular as ever.

Gloria and Grace

From Brazilian director  Flávio R. Tambellini comes this heartwarming tale about a family re-discovering each other.   When Grace a single mother with two children is diagnosed with a brain aneurism that may rupture at any moment, and her first thought is who will take care of her kids when she dies. She hasn’t seen her only brother Luis Carlos ever since they quarreled 15 years ago, and when she reaches out to him she discovers he has become Gloria, a beautiful and successful transvestite.
