The Scottish Queer international Film Festival in Glasgow may be the new kid on the block as it is just about to have its Second Edition, but it does however have an eclectic schedule of edgy and idiosyncratic programming that would put some much more established queer festivals to shame.
For four days starting Thursday 29th September until Sunday 2nd October 2016 SQIFF is showing some of the best new LGBTQ films mixed in with a few wonderful cult classics such as Derek Jarman’s 1976 masterpiece Sebastiane. Plus there are a whole series of intriguing workshops such as a Masterclass with Raúl de la Morena and Antonio Centeno the filmmakers of the Spanish documentary Yes, we fuck! an unflinching and nuanced exploration of disability and sexual desire that is also being screened at the Festival.
Our top film picks of the Festival (besides Sebastiane) are
Strike A Pose : a remarkable documentary that revisits the dancers from Madonna’s iconic Blond Ambition World Tour 25 years ago. Heartbreaking and very touching this completely compelling film is also a reflection on how far the gay community has journeyed in the past 25 years.
Coming Out : young filmmaker Alden Peter’s own heartwarming journey of when he dealt with coming out to his family and friends soon after Tyler Clementi took his own live after being publicly outed.
Real Boy: any documentary that makes a contribution to the continuing transgender dialogue is important, but when it is as poignant and compelling as ‘Real Boy’, then it can play a significant role in nurturing more understanding and acceptance both within the community and society at large.
