This French made-for-TV movie written and directed by Christophe Charrier is an intriguing tale of two incidents in young Jonas’s life that occurred some 18 years apart and that are totally intertwined.
When we first see him as a quiet gameboy-obsessed 16 year old game boy in 1995, Jonas ( Nicolas Bauwens) obviously has some demons to deal with. Likewise when the action flashes forward and we see him as a troubled 33 year old Jonas ( Félix Maritaud ) has his issues and is now being thrown out of a gay club after starting a fight.
The older Jonas is quite a loner just drifting through life getting evicted from his boyfriend’s apartment after having a string of Grindr hookups, and working as a hospital porter by day. He looks rougher and tougher than when he was such an introspective schoolboy who even surprised himself when he fell in love with Nathan (Tommy Lee Baïk ) an outgoing and charismatic new classmate who seemed his total opposite.
As the story slowly unfolds in a series of flashbacks we gradually learn the real cause of Jonas’s current unhappiness and why he is desperate to get some closure on his teenage traumas and be able to move on with his life.
It’s an intriguing tale, and told very compellingly with enough twists in the plot to keep you really engaged to the very end. The very competent cast help that, particularly Maritaud (Sauvage , BPM (Beats Per Minute) as the older Jonas who proves once again what a fine talented actor he is, as well as being devilishly handsome too.
