There are some days I actually feel sorry for straight guys. Today was one such day. It has nothing to do with actual physical lovemaking (as if!), but the fact that they are missing out on so much by not being part of our queer community. It’s by no means perfect every day, but most of the time, it’s a sheer joy.
Like today, I got to spend some 20 mins talking with Stephen Hanna Shulford, one half of The Broadway Dads, about their new book GOOD NIGHT: BREAK A LEG, written especially for their 4-year-old son Maverick. Stephen was not just passionate about the project but exuded such love and compassion about being a gay Dad as well.
To witness him being so very positive about life was uplifting, especially as he is still recovering from the recent premature death of his husband, Bret Shulford, the author. It’s not just a test of his resilience and his devotion to Maverick that was so infectious, but also sharing this intimate moment with me, a stranger, demonstrated not just the goodness of his heart, but how within our community we can and do share with each other .
Our meeting may have been brief, but its relevance has left its mark on me and reminded me how our community is so enriched by the Stephen Hannas of the world.
