The very British tradition of pantomimes that goes back several hundred years is one of the queerest forms of entertainment that has ever hit the stage, yet is presented as good old-fashioned family entertainment.  It is based on the fact that the leading male juvenile character (the principal boy) is traditionally played by a young woman in male garments (such as breeches) and her romantic partner is usually the principal girl, a female ingénue.  Plus an older woman (the pantomime dame – often the hero’s mother) is usually played by a man in drag.  And if that is not enough for the normally puritanical Brits, the whole thing’s risqué double entendre, often wringing innuendo out of perfectly innocent phrases. This is not intended to be understood by children in the audience and is for the entertainment of the adults, which is such a misnomer in itself.

Its a tradition that is very much alive and well in the UK, thanks to the likes of TuckShop, the UK’s only specialist production company devoted to all things drag.  They are delighted to announce the fifth anniversary edition of their all-drag pantomimes: SNOW WHITE. which will run at the Emerald Theatre in the West End this winter. It will star Tayris Mongardi (Drag Race UK Season 7 contestant) as Snow White and Oliver Clothezoff (2025’s The Great British Bake Off – the show’s first drag king contestant) as Drag King Prince.
