Ron Amato’s day job is as a Professor in the Photography and Related Media department of Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City, but like most gay men who ‘discover’ Provincetown, the gay mecca at the tip of Cape Cod, it gave him a different approach to life . Amato fell in love not just with the men (well that happens to us all ) but both the sheer beauty of the windswept beaches and the fact that the Town is also home to the country’s oldest.art colony. Its provided him with a never ending array of subject matter his stunning series of Nudes on the sand dunes are considered iconic.
Last year PTown’s Eric Lesh Gallery mounted a retrospective of Amato’s work Playing In The Sunshine 1999 -2022, and now this summer PAAM (Provincetown Art Association Museum) is presenting his latest solo show ARTISTS OF PROVINCETOWN This exhibition highlights artists with deep ties to Provincetown,, during the early 21st century. Made over a period of eight years, Amato has created eighty-four deeply penetrating portraits which illustrate the breadth and depth of the community. Making use of the color and light which is uniquely Provincetown, Amato’s imagery is both dynamic and authentic.
Queerguru caught up with Amato to talk about the whole history behind the creation of the show which will be on for Summer 24 and how this will continue his love affair with the Town, And ours too.
