It’s almost that time of year when large corporations start helping us celebrate Gay Pride months. queerguru is sometimes skeptical at a few corporations who haven’t always been so gay-friendly and who suddenly appear to be jumping on the politically correct bandwagon.
Levi-Strauss however has been an exemplary ally of our community for simply ages. It seems apt that as the company started their operation in San Francisco back in 1853 that for their project for this years Pride they have teamed up with a local group The Harvey Milk Foundation to produce a new range of gender-neutral clothing.
The range’s star piece is a denim jacket emblazoned with one of the late gay SF Supervisor’s best quotes ‘Hope Will Never Be Silent’. The collection also includes denim shorts with a rainbow Levi tag, and an evergreen Pride T-Shirt and a hat with the Levi’s rainbow batwing.
Levis will donate part of the proceeds of the sale of the collection to The Harvey Milk Foundation which was co-founded by Stuart Milk, Harvey’s nephew and is a not-for-profit global organization with the goal of empowering other organizations to fully realize the power of Harvey Milk’s story. Grant Barth, chief merchandising officer at Levi Strauss & Co., explained the inspiration of the collection to WWD. “Harvey was a true leader, whose passion was palpable and has expanded the decades since his untimely assassination,” said “He brought not only the LGBTQ community forward, but he fought for the visibility of all minorities.”
The new collection will be available beginning in March at select locations throughout Australia and Asia and throughout the Americas and Europe in May and June. It will also be available for purchase on select Levi.com sites around the globe including Australia, Japan, the Americas and Europe. Details from www.levistrauss.com
