Award-winning writer/director Honey Lauren‘s feature film debut, MISTAKE, is one of the rare pieces of art that actually gave our Editor/reviewer very weepy eyes. ‘MISTAKE’ is not just a tale of gender dysphoria but a rather beautiful love story full of empathy that celebrates difference. Larry was born intersex back in the 1970’s in the Deep South, and the parents, simple tobacco farmers, are confronted with having to decide how to bring their child up.
They decided to raise ‘them’ as a male, and from then on, he struggles with self-loathing over his unique and socially forbidden identity, and as such, he desperately seeks to find family and friends who will understand and support him. A surprise discovery of love and friendship with Lily, another town outsider, brings him joy and acceptance, while he must also deal with the heartbreaking violence and uncompromising bigotry of his small-town rural life. Lauren’s film not only shines a light on the rare circumstance of being intersex, but with the aid of an exceptionally talented cast, weaves a story that celebrates difference. and steers us toward such compassion for outsiders.
Queerguru talks with Lauren on the eve of the movie’s premiere at the Sedona Film Festival as it starts its run on the Film Festival Circuit This film is like a breath of fresh air in this current political climate, where we are actually encouraged to hate ANYTHING that is outside the norm and that we do not understand. YOU WILL SO KICK YOURSELF IF YOU DON’T MAKE EVERY EFFORT TO SEE THIS EXCEPTIONAL FILM
