Filmmaker Jenni Olson talks about 575 CASTRO : some of the last words of HARVEY MILK

When Gus Van Sant was shooting his movie MILK in 20O8, a previously unknown cassette was found. It was of Harvey Milk talking about what he would like to happen in the event of his premature death. It makes for sobering listening, as we know it wasn’t long before he and SF Mayor George Moscone were assassinated in broad daylight

The audio track of their new doc 570 Castro is an edited-down version of the 13-minute audio cassette that Harvey Milk recorded in his camera shop on the evening of Friday, November 18, 1977 (a few weeks after his election to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, which made him one of the first openly gay elected officials in the United States)

This short doc, commissioned by Focus Features, was filmed on the set that Van Sant had built for Milk’s Camera Shop and was made by filmmaker Jenni Olsen, known for her queer 16 mm movies. She talked about the whole experience and the significance of being able to document this quintessential piece of queer history, which is now streaming on Vimeo and YouTube
