As much as we love our gay brothers and sisters (and we really do!) we know that we can turn into whiners at some time. Like when our favorite Bar closes, or too many people swipe left, or the crowd is getting younger …. or worst still, disappears, or straight people who simply love to make big profits off of us. If you’re reading this and shaking your head and refusing to accept that you ever whine, then you need your Gay Card taken away as all of us do it at some time or another.
Except Queerguru is fortunate to know one gay man who never whines. As long as we have known him, with his optimism, energy and sheer charisma, he remains such a positive force in creating events for our community that make any nay-sayer change their minds.
Edison Farrow arrived in Miami Beach in. 1995 (some 5 years before QUEERGURU) and South Beach was buzzing. So many gay men had moved there in the decade before in the AIDS pandemic simply to die. However with the introduction of protese inhibitiors that now removed the automtic death and suddenly we could sense this whole new love of life that we so needed celebrating. And thanks to Edison we could
The Beach was never infested with wall-to-wall gay bars like nearby Wilton Manors. instead its LGBTQA+ community starting bringing a queer edge to the wealth of restaurants and bars. Then to supplement this Edison created his first big success MARTINI TUESDAYS which was held at a different Hotel bar every week , giving us all a chance to experence so much more of SoBe ….. and its men! It ran for a staggering 12 years.
But it was just a start as he followed that with seven years of “The Simple Life” Thursdays at Buck15, “Euphoria Fridays” at Jade Lounge, “Hype Fridays” at Bar 721, “Sky Sundays” on the Esme Hotel rooftop, “Smash Sundays” at Chalk, “Karma Saturdays,” “Relay Dating” gay speed dating, the “ Miami Beach Gay Bowling League” and Drag Brunch at Señor Frogs Miami Beach. I started the first ever Drag Brunch in 2000 at Samba Room. More recently, I did “Heaven” on Ocean Drive next to the Clevelander, but it was very short-lived. We had huge crowds, which showed great possibilities and interest in new venues. However, the owners and management were extremely disorganized and did not deliver the quality of events that the people or I were expecting.
Now he is running The Rooftop a weekly party at the Lincoln Eatery, a beautiful venue with great views. It really has to be experinced. to be believed. With Edison at the helm it was an immediate success and is packed every week and something we so need right now in thios pernicious political climate.
Every queer community deserves its own Edison Farrow : a gay man committed to making this a better place to live in and who is not driven by the concept of making a quick buck out of us. We are just so lucky in South Beach that we have the orginal |
