David Kaplan, writer, director, and curator, is a very passionate man, which makes him a perfect fit for Provincetown. One of his main passions is Tennessee Williams : his writing and his men.. William was also passionate about Provincetown and when he lived there for four summers in the 1940s, he wrote some of his best work (and probably fell in love with some of his best men too)
Twenty years ago, Kaplan co-founded Provincetown’s Tennessee Williams Theater Festival, which quickly became one of the most successful events of the summer. Some of its success was due to his insistence on introducing some of Williams’ lesser-known works….(he was a prolific writer)…. also, the whole concept of introducing drama companies from overseas to give their own interpretations of the very American work was a stroke of genius. Our favorite was Abrahamse and Meyers, a theatre group. from South Africa
Then there is the Festival’s tradition of presenting work of other writers in the same class/style as William’s that had some similarity/relevance to William’s output, (this summer it was the plays of Samual Beckett).
Now it has been decided that the Festival will transform after 2025, and the mission of the Festival will continue but in new ways, championing Tennessee Williams in other forms in Provincetown –and around the world. As Kaplan told Queerguru, “We’ve enjoyed our run: productions of over a hundred different plays by Williams, from Adam and Eve on a Ferry (2008) to Will Mr. Merriwether Return from Memphis? (2018). From A to W, if not quite A to Z.
We’re so can’t wait to see what’s next, so we sat down to talk with David Kaplan to hear about any plans so far….
