Queerguru’s Editor is an ex Brit that immigrated to the US but still after several years there is expected to defend English cuisine to Americans, who are not particularly known for ‘fine dining’ themselves I ask them to focus on the facts such as the US population is now 335 million and the country is home to almost 200 Michelin star restaurants. On the other hand the UK’s population is some 66 million yet has 239 Michelin star restaurants (Can you see where this is going?)
I am the first to admit that not all english food suits every visitors taste buds, but we are a country known for its eccentricity and sometimes that seeps in to the food. Take the case of the Anya Hindmarch Ice Cream Project. (that’s Dame Anya Hindmarch to you). The Dame, one of the smart London Chelsea set is a fashion accessory designer . However as well as being the CEO of her Company, she is a best-selling author and the holder of many important positions in society (apologies if I miss any of them off this list)
She is emeritus trustee of both the Royal Academy of Arts, and the Design Museum, and a trustee of The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity, a Greenpeace ambassador a trustee of the Tate Gallery and a non-executive director of Tate Enterprises Ltd and an advisor to the Board of Trade.
However today we just want to focus on the most unusual ice cream flavours that the very busy Dame has created . Her Ice Cream Project concept store, is serving up scoops of quintessential English products such Heinz Baked Beans, Branston Piccalilli, Sarson’s Vinegar, Kikkoman Soy Sauce and Perello Olive flavoured ice creams. Yes really.
The project ends this WEEKEND and they will be serving tubs of strawberry & malt vinegar, pesto & Italian basil, and Gordal olive-studded ice cream. If you want something a little safer and sweeter, there are also Jaffa Cakes, Tiptree Orange Marmalade, Bird’s Custard, Tropicana Orange Juice and Sun-Pat Peanut Butter flavors on offer too.
When Queerguru asked WHY, we were told it is to celebrate Dame Anya’s fave brands by taking products that would typically be found in the pantry and putting them in the freezer instead. To which we just replied BUT WHY?
