CROWDFUNDING Help uncover stories of queer domesticity and create an LGBTQ+ home in London’s Museum Of The Home

If you are a regular reader of QUEERGURU you will know that (one of the many things) we are passionate about is documenting the history of the LGBTQ+ community.  To this end, we are happy to throw our support behind a new project in London this summer to recreate a Queer Household for the Museum of The Home.

The organisers’ work with various members of the queer community has highlighted the lack of LGBTQ+ stories in the Museum galleries, and how important it is for everybody’s story of home to be represented. Across community consultation events, drop-ins and workshops, the community reaffirmed the importance of leaving one’s  ‘hometown’ for the big city, meeting other Queers, and creating a new home with chosen family.

All this research allowed them to tell the story of Alex, Sara and Ashley who live in an ex-council flat (project housing) in Hackney. Alex has recently left their rural hometown to move to London, they met Sara and Ashley through East London’s vibrant Queer Scene. The Exhibit will show a snapshot of their daily lives as they turn this flat into a home, and play a key role in the area’s LGBTQ+ community.

So they are raising funds to co-create a new period room set which will uncover queer stories of home in the early 2000s.  Plus they want to collect objects to reflect the everyday lived experience of the recent past. This is something frequently overlooked but significant in shaping our narratives of home.

This is your opportunity to get directly involved and support the acquisition of objects and stories that would otherwise be lost or discarded.

Please help to raise £10,000 to collect the objects needed to move Alex, Sara and Ashley into their new home.

HERE IS HOW YOU CAN HELP
