Brit choreographer GARY CLARKE talks about DETENTION his stunning new dance theater that explores the history of Thatchers attempt to squash our communtyy

Queerguru talks with Brit queer choreographer GARY CLARKE about DETENTION his new dance theater which explores the impact of SECTION 28 a very nasty piece of Legislation from the Thatcher Government in the 1980s which prohibited the promotion of homosexuality. The piece draws on Gary’s personal experience growing up under the legislation as a gay man in a village in Northern England.

The legislation had a profound impact on his confidence and sense of self, and was a challenge to navigate in a town that was also going through a huge amount of turbulence with the closure of mines.

Its a stunning moving piece that is wowing audiences around the UK especially younger members of the LGBTQ community who have been unaware of this part of queer history that pre-dates them
