The Queerguru Editorial Board has always been aware that we simply do not include enough sports in our Blog, which in a way confirms our stereotypical nature. We would love to change our content to make it more inclusive, but meanwhile we have just discovered a new queer sports documentary that so deserves to be shared.
Its been created by MUNDIAL, a football magazine, with just the right amount of football. Released four times a year, the content is timeless with cult heroes, weekends away, brilliant writing, forgotten goals, and exceptional photography. From Sunday League and Sausage and Chips, to Champions League and iconic kits, they celebrate the game and the things around it that make people happy.
We love their mission statement: We tell stories that take time and care to put together, and because you’re paying for it, we want you to hold something special that looks wonderful, smells great, and allows you to put down the phone and immerse yourself in something beautiful.
We love their new documentary ‘Why Is Women’s Football So Gay’ because it has a series of lesbians answering this question with such a wonderful sense of knowledge and humor in a manner that only they could do. As we laughed with them about the reality of so many myths …… such as dating your best friends etc…. that we knew would not sit so well if they came from a man….gay or not. This wonderful wee film leaves us in no doubt at all that from the very top level all the way down to grassroots, women’s football is gloriously, unapologetically and very visibly gay.
Presented by Rosie Hewitson and Suky Stroud, this Brit documentary is a celebration and investigation into queer football culture in the women’s game. From teams being sponsored by brands called Uberlube, to podcasts called Match of the Gay, and from Women’s Super League rumours, to the awkward encounters training with or playing against your ex-girlfriend on a Thursday night, queer culture is at the forefront at every level of the sport.
PS And all of this happening on a day when ARSENAL one of London’s top teams announces that their Womens Team have just smashed records with 17,000 seasonal memberships !!!! Who knew ?
