Frederick Philip Lenz was a very controversial American spiritual leader, writer, software designer, and record producer who founded what he termed “American Buddhism”, which incorporated many New Age Ideas. Not the sort of person that I would ever normally be attracted to, and until today, I actually have never even heard of him. Coincidentally, it turns out that he ended his own life in 1998, the same year that I moved to the USA to begin my new one. The reason I even mention him now is that, unknown to me, he coined the phrase, which became a kind of mantra to me.
“The trick in life is to find out where you belong. Once you find out where you belong, you will be happy there.” |
Suffering from a major personal loss at the time, I found myself swapping the dank cold of London for the sunny climes of Miami Beach. It was a spur-of-the-moment decision, and initially it would be like a (long) weekend getaway from running a high-pressure business. So for the next 18 years, I jumped on a Virgin flight and crossed the Ocean some 6 times per year. My first home there was an Art Deco condo in the heart of the historic district in a small complex of some 8 units. It was just like ‘Melrose Place‘ compounded by the fact that I soon found a neighbor who liked to gossip as much as I did. I was beginning to think that I had indeed found the place I belonged until the same neighbor/new best friend told me about this one other place over the rainbow that even Dorothy would have given her right arm for. It was a 5-day drive (now remembering we can travel the whole of the UK in just 24 hours) and on the very tip of Cape Cod, and the exact same spot that almost 400 years ago, other Brits had landed (Note to Historians, they were a. very picky bunch and so sailed on to Plymouth ).
That first year I stayed in Provincetown for one week. The next year two weeks, and then a whole month the following year. It was easy progress to soon spending the whole of the summer there : i could run my buisness remotely but as London was 5 hours ahead, my ‘working day’ would end at I pm P.Town time. Perfect timing for a cup of tea (some old habits die hard) and that’s when I discovered what would quickly become one of my favorite PTown hangouts THE CAPTAINS DAUGHTERS.
Founded in 2017 by two best friends who had been execs at Mark Jacobs together, Meghan O’Connor and Dani Niedzielski now owned this business with a Brick + Mortar boutique, gallery + tea bar in PTown’s East End. It has stunning bay views as well as to-go tea service of modern wellness-focused beverages : luxury with low key vibe and where I spent many an afternoon. It was an essential part of me realising that this one sleepy fishing village was really where i now belonged. Here’s a interview they filmed with Queerguru back in 2018
Fast foward the best part of 20 years, I’ve closed my fashion buisness, retired, left London for good, married a Falmouth man with whom I now own two properties in our home town of PTown. When Richard looked for work a few years back, there was no question of where he would go and he ended being an “adopted” daughter working for our friends at The Captains Daughters. This move to us recognises what a remarkable place this town is, but also more about the people who make it that special …… and is why my husband and I feel/know that we belong.
So now its 2025 and our love affair with the town moves up to the next level, wth Dani and Meghan taking on new lfe challenges, Richard is about to step up to the plate. This Memorial Weekend he becomes the store’s new Captain bringing with him some fab new fashion, nautical accessories, shiny trinkets, and exotic teas from his world travels. Plus a weekly arts show featuring a local PTown artist.
Mr Lenz was so very right “The trick in life is to find out where you belong. Once you find out where you belong, you will be happy there.”
