Wanna be the next big Miss Thing in Drag?

There are so many other ways to become the next biggest Miss Thing in Drag without waiting for Ru Paul to call.  Especially as of our fav. events is about out to kick off its 15th year.

Drag Idol, is the UK’s biggest drag talent competition and after all these years   still remains one of the few competitions on the live scene that can genuinely launch careers on the drag and cabaret circuit .  It has produced some of the brightest talents on the queer and cabaret scene including  one of all time favourites La Voix plus Louis CyFer, SonofaTutu, Kelly Mild, Danny Beard, Baga Chipz, Martha D’Arthur, Tanya Hyde, Tracy Barlow and last years’ winner; Felix Le Freak to name a few.

La Voix

The whole thing is run by a committee that includes Royal Vauxhall Tavern the  legendary gay epicenter in London that has always been such a hotspot for homos that even Princess Diana in disguise  got Freddie Mercury to smuggle her in one night. There are nationwide heats however that will be held at – Quay Pride, OMG Plymouth, Charles Street Tap Brighton, OMG Liverpool, On The Rocks Hastings, Halfway II Heaven London,  OMG Bristol, The Victoria London, Via Manchester, Two Brewers London, Sundowners Margate, Mary’s Cardiff, Old Ship London, The Kings Swansea, Admiral Duncan London, Eden Birmingham, Central Station London.

We asked Catia Ciarico the Programme Manager and Producer at the RVT about the origins of Drag Idol which she told us was shrouded in mystery like all good divine births but it has grown exponentially from its humble beginnings.

We do know it was started at the wonderful  Black Cap (long gone but never forgotten) and its first host and organiser was Drag legend Titti La Camp,. Nowadays with a wide range of acts vying to win the crown there is also the prize of £4000 worth of guaranteed work in a year along with a guaranteed booking on the main stage of London Pride
