(Up) Schitt’s Creek

It’s been 10 years since Christopher Guest’s last manic movie ‘For Your Consideration’ was on our screens, and if you simply cannot wait any longer to see his gang back on the screen together (his next movie ‘Mascots’ will be released later this year) then you’ll want to go up Schitt’s Creek.

This new comedy TV series starring two of Guest’s regulars the incomparable Eugene Levy and Catherine O’Hara who play  Johnny and Moira Rose, a wealthy couple who are forced after losing all their money to rebuild their lives in their only remaining asset: the small town of Schitt’s Creek, which they once purchased as a joke, where they are living with their two adult children in two adjacent rooms of a rundown motel.

danWritten by Levy and his (very hot looking ) son Dan Levy ,who also stars as the hilarious pansexual son, it is wonderful vehicle for O’Hara in particular who is nothing less than superb as the overdressed rather grand ex- Soap Opera actress who is like a fish out of water who still wants to shine even in this rather crummy town.

This Canadian series has received mixed reviews but it still recently picked up 9 Awards at the Canadian TV Awards, and after being aired on some US channel at the far end of the dial, it now available streaming for free on Amazon Prime. queerguru will be the first to admit that there is nothing that wonderfully original about this sit-com, but watching Levy and O’Hara perform together is such a sheer joy together even if the script is less than perfect.  Plus there is always Dan to stare at.

The sad news is that the success of the show means that both O’Hara and Levy will NOT be part of the Guest ‘reunion’ in ‘Mascots’ ……. panic not as it will still star Jennifer CoolidgeParker PoseyBob BalabanJane LynchFred Willard, and Ed Begley Jr.  The movie is going to be in a similar vein as the mockumentary ‘Best In  Show’  (probably Guest’s best ever movie) and the synopsis on the poster reads “Welcome to all the drama, intrigue and occasional excitement of The 8th World Mascot Association Championships, where a group of ‘unusual’ men and women, with big heads and furry suits, compete to win the prestigious gold fluffy award and be crowned best mascot in the world.”
