There are two biopics premiering at Telluride Film Festival right now about two very different musicians named Willams. One is about the Academy Award nominated American musician, singer, songwriter, rapper, record producer, and fashion designer. who has been nominated 4 times for a Grammy … winning on 13 occasions. When he is not making music these days Pharrell is also Men’s creative director for Louis Vuitton
However is the movie about the other Williams that has grabbed our attention here at Queerguru. He has always been known in his native UK as ‘one of lads ‘ with a very naughty boy streak to him. Robbie Williams initially burst on the music as a member of the boy band Take That from 1990 to 1995, launching a solo career in 1996.
He has had seven UK No. 1 singles, and all but one of his 14 studio albums have reached No. 1 in the UK. Six of his albums are among the top 100 biggest-selling albums in the UK, with two of them in the top 60, and he gained a Guinness World Record in 2006 for selling 1.6 million tickets in a single day during his Close Encounters Tour.
For some reason that is still not clear to us he never may a real impact in the US and although he does not have any Grammys, he has received a record 18 Brit Awards, winning Best British Male Artist four times, Outstanding Contribution to Music twice, an Icon Award for his lasting impact on British culture, eight German ECHO Awards, and three MTV European Music Awards.
His biopic Better Man from Michael Grasey (Director The Greatest Showman, Producer RocketMan) was greeted with a fab review from Roger Ebert the dreamlike musical sequences. featuring his solo hit “Angels” and smash track “Rock DJ,” are fierce setpieces, leaning on whip pans and theatrical whimsy to make “Better Man” better and much more intoxicating than you’d expect.
Yes, it includes Williams having sex with other women besides his girlfriend, but regardless of this, he was (and still is) and outrageously sexy flirt who we considered to be one of us …. albeit an honorary positition
It has just been announced that the film will open in Australia on Christmas Day and we are hoping the rest of the world gets this highly anticipated film then too. Watch This Space
