Palm Springs is known as the gayest town in the USA with some 50% of the 50,000 residents identifying as queer even though its a city with mostly gated retirement communities and golf courses, surrounded by desert that reaches temperatures of well over 110°F . This year, it may seem a little less gay now that the two biggest queer events will be no more. The White Party is on a hiatus and they will be more Dinah Shore Weekends after this year.
Now news has reached us from Wynwood, a district of mainland Miami (ie not Miami Beach) that TWO gay bars are closing. Willys Bar, which had been open for just over 1 year (!) after they aimed to be a third space for Miami’s LGBTQ+. At the same time, one of the remaining two gay bars is Gramps who are 13 years of karaoke and live shows, drag and sports gatherings, and the spot so many call the last good bar in Wynwood, is closing too
In the paraphrased words of Oscar Wilde in The Importance of Being Earnest. : To lose one may be regarded as a misfortune, to lose two looks like carelessness!
