Bullyache, a contemporary queer dance company out of London, launch their latest work TOM, at Hackney Wick’s fabulous Yard Theatre this 9-13th May. Part of the Now Festival, Bullyache’s energetic dancers are a combination of world-champion gymnasts, voguers, classical musicians and Kathak dancers. TOM uses original live music influenced by pop culture, classical music, and opera, amazing outfits by @lambdog1066 and very strong make-up looks to present an onslaught of fighting, fucking, living, laughing and loving. A study of modern life.
In the words of Bullyache founders and co-directors Courtney Deyn and Jacob Samuel: “Our work is a melodramatic, deconstructed pageant of exhaustion – faggotry, pop music, slutty Nijinsky, and commercial dancing. TOM is our attempt to distill, to communicate perspectives and lived experiences we have around class. Life is exhausting. Surviving is exhausting. This work is about trying to make some sense of that labour. Often these feelings about the world are so abstract & complicated to render straightforwardly in words. Our process – making music, working with collaborators (dancers, designers) & sharing with audiences – all of these are ways in. Ways for us to create space for communal experience; especially for people who can feel so othered by so much of culture.”
Sounds like an interesting assault on the senses. If you’ve ever admired the work of the legend that is Michael Clark, then check these guys out. The 60 minute shows are almost sold out, so head on over to www.theyardtheatre.co.uk for tickets before it’s too late.
Bullyache are also presenting their first-ever club night, Bootyache, at The Yard on 13th May. The unofficial wrap party for TOM. More info here. https://theyardtheatre.co.uk/events/now-23-bootyache/
