It’s hard to believe that the Pet Shop Boys have been making music together for the past 45 years. During that time, they have sold more than 100 million records worldwide and are listed in The Guinness Book of Records as the most successful duo in British music history. They are also one of the best-selling bands of all time in the UK.
Much of their success is their continued relevance particulary to the queer community and the fact that their choice of new music manages to both fit in with the current mood/direction of pop music without feeling a need to pamper to any fleeting new trend.
What makes Queerguru such loyal fans is the way they have always embraced. their queerness in their music, no more so than in their current new album A MAN FROM THE FUTURE. This is a collaboration with Andrew Hodges the biographer of ALAN TURING considered the father of modern computer science and artificial intelligence.
At Britain’s Government Code & Cypher School, Dr. Turing developed an analytic approach for the ENIGMA that would outlast German operational changes. He developed an early solution and became operational chief of Hut 8, the naval cryptanalysts. Dr. Turing’s interest in artificial intelligence led him to develop the “Turing Machine,” which is still used as a basic teaching device in computer science. During World War II his theories about machines in analysis were used to develop COLOSSUS, which processed very high-grade enciphered communications and that many consider the world’s first operational computer.
Dr. Turing’s cryptologic accomplishments in World War II saved thousands of lives and shortened the war, while his theories and work led to development of the modern computer. His towering achievements changed cryptology and the world at large, and continue to do so today.
Dr. Turing made no attempt to hide his homosexuality, and he was accepted without hesitation by his colleagues. However, because homosexual acts were illegal in Great Britain at the time, he faced legal repercussions. He eventually took his own life.
“Our motive in creating this work was to make a musical memorial to Alan Turing who gave so much to his country and the world and was rewarded for it by being prosecuted for his sexuality, Alan made a massive contribution to the defeat of Germany in World War II and was a pioneer of computing, imagining a world with intelligent computers. He also looked forward to a time when being gay would be accepted as normal. In both his professional and private lives, he was ahead of his time.” reads a statement from Pet Shop Boys.
