Queer Londoners, who once included QG’s editor in their number, are always so reluctant to admit that from time to time some of the best queer theatre events are held in the Burbs.  Enough with the screams of quelle horror!  For example, here is one splendid event coming up soon that is even worth exposing oneself to the rigours of the British public transport system 

Next month we’ll be travelling all the way down to Penzance in the  West Country  (even the fast train takes 5 hours!) for a very special reason.  SUZY EDDIE IZZARD will be bringing her acclaimed solo performance of Shakespeare’s THE TRAGEDY OF HAMLET to The Minack Theatre.  Direct from playing to packed houses in NORTH AMERICA, UK, Australia and New Zealand, Emmy Award-winning and Tony Award-nominated performer SUZY EDDIE IZZARD’s production is performed on the blank canvas of a bare stage, letting Shakespeare’s words and pure storytelling take the spotlight. The production recently celebrated its 300th performance.

Selina Cadell directs this Hamlet from an adaptation by Mark Izzard, and it has been getting rave reviews “A monstrous achievement,”  wrote SYDNEY MORNING HERALD, Awesome to witness.” LOS ANGELES TIMES. Even Dame Judi Dench piped in, calling it ‘spectacular ‘, and who are we to argue with her? 

However, our favorite quote comes from ARTSHUB in Australia, which wrote, “In the decades to come, you’ll want to be one of those fortunate enough to say, ‘Oh yes, I saw Izzard’s solo version of Hamlet. I was there.’ You know, like Woodstock or the Beatles on the roof of the Apple building.”
