Malcolm Ingram the writer/director of the award winning documentary Small Town Gay Bar in 2006 which focused on two isolated gay bars in Mississippi including Rumors, in Shannon (pop. 1,657), and which dealt with the community’s struggles of ignorance, hypocrisy and oppression, is going back to the Deep South.
Ingram who also wrote and directed Bear Nation, Out To Win (about LGBT athletes) Continental (about NY’s iconic Baths), says his new movie ‘Southern Pride’ will be the spiritual follow-up to Small Town Gay Bar documentary. He adds that it’s the story of a town finding its Pride.
Given the political climate and all the talk of homophobia and the drastic increase in the number of hate crimes reported since the Election, the timing of Ingram’s new candid look at another isolated Gay Bar in Mississippi could not be more timely and relevant. Currently filming he has started a Kickstarter campaign to fund this latest project, and below is a video where Ingram explains in more detail what the documentary will be about.
