Riverside Studios unveils a packed summer season of bold new theatre, comedy and special anniversary events celebrating 50 years of the iconic West London venue, including some great queer content. Here are just two of our top picks.’
Second Class Queer, Written, performed, and produced by Kumar Muniandy
At a live, fast-paced gay speed-dating night in Berlin, Krishna, a gay Tamil-Malaysian man, finds himself across the table from five wildly different speed-daters: a naïvely Eurocentric Brit, a charming German who ‘doesn’t see colour’, a proud plus-sized Pakistani-British Muslim, a gentle caring Black British NHS nurse, and a Western yogi chasing spirituality. Each encounter pushes Krishna to confront love, loss, identity, and the truth he never shared with his late mother.
Funny, tender, and honest, Second Class Queer is a solo performance that speaks directly to anyone who has ever been made to feel like a guest in their own life. Now playing until 30 May,
RON (13 June – 5 July) is a bold and genre-defying new solo show written and performed by Ted Walliker. This absurd, violent, queer odyssey explores the nature of unrequited love; how far would you go to show someone you love them? Sometimes you’re just the Ron person in the Ron place at the Ron time.
Blending razor-sharp comedy with unsettling tonal shifts, the queer odyssey explores unrequited love, performance and obsession.
