When Canadian native RICHARD WILLETT emigrated to New York in the 1980s’ his ‘coming out’ took place against the AIDS pandemic, which made him (and all of us) take stock of life in general. So he channelled energy into writing his first (and only novel) A FRIEND OF DOROTHY’S about living through that time. Parts of which were printed in a couple of queer lit magazines back then, but the novel sat on his desk until last year, when he finally self-published it.
It’s been collecting rave reviews because of both the truth and humour in the narrative, but also because of the importance of members of our community being the ones to write our own queer history. We tracked down Willett, now a very successful playwright in LA, because QUEERGURU knows that this story of his so needs to be shared widely
