Queerguru’s Jose Mayorgas reviews Vaishali Sinha’s eye-opening ‘GIVE IT A SHOT’ Doc that follows a global race to develop a new male contraceptive

This documentary refers to a reversible male contraceptive announced as “the first breakthrough since the modern condom was invented 200 years ago”

Directed by Vaishali Sinha, the film does justice to Dr. Sujoy Guha in his admirable quest for humanity. This scientist, for decades, has developed in India the so-called RISUG, a reversible male contraceptive that, against all odds, has been implemented in one of the most populated countries in the world and should be an example to follow. The distribution of the male contraceptive worldwide has faced many, many difficulties, though, and the documentary refers to them.

The film shows the rigorous work Dr. Guha and his collaborators have done; it matters to them because the topic has been important for decades. In the country of origin, the burden on women has lifted, and Indian men are also responsible for that, since they are aware that in an intimate relationship there are two equal parts.

In the Western World and in the United States of America, the story has been completely different; there, women have been and are the ones responsible for taking the pill and doing whatever is needed for fertility control, not to mention that nowadays there is no constitutional law for certain women’s rights.  The film states a sharp cultural contrast between Indians and Americans, the latter approaching the situation almost as a joke.  This suggests that the male/female duality is shared, and the biggest obstacle is how men think.

Intriguing to watch, the film may feel somewhat indignant, but Dr. Guha’s calm and wit contribute to a coherent case where information prevails.  The director balances the academic aspects of the topic with its daily application and its positive impact on the Indian population.

Let´s join the conversation on male contraceptives for birth control globally.
