Your face, long unseen; not a day goes by without longing…
A story from the Far East dedicated to the predecessors becomes a visually stunning film that discloses lifelong acts of love and sacrifice.
It takes several decades that evolve gradually, starting with the celebration of Ama´s birthday; the grandmother is in her 80s and has descendants, right at the beginning, and through one of her grandsons we learn Ama´s husband moved to Thailand looking for a better future for him and his immediate family. Communication and economic support were made by letters, the only means through which money was sent, and life was shared; that is why letters are a fundamental part of the narrative.
The film shows the reason why Chinese Remittance Agencies and Remittance Documents were inscribed as “Memory of the World Register” by UNESCO, praised as living manuscripts of the overseas Chinese people´s history and traditions.
“Dear You” spans several decades (from the early 1950s to the late 2010s), presented through flashbacks. In addition to the letters, a few family portrait photos are also relevant, since they provide information and a hidden truth about years and years of misunderstandings.
The three main characters are the heart of the film, and the individuality of each is engaging; among them there is a strong bond of love and brother/sisterhood, deeply moving because of its loyalty and devotion. By the end of the film, it is evident that this intangible wealth far surpasses any million-dollar inheritance one could wish to find.
While the plot may be a little confusing at the beginning due to certain characters and the handling of dates, once it shows the protagonists´story, it is deeply captivating. A must-see!
