Queerguru’s Jose Mayorga reviews REBUILDING in which Josh O’Connor steals the pic. Again

A devastated landscape after wildfires sets the tone of this fictional drama the sophomore film written and directed by Max Walker-Silverman.  Magnificent woods turned into vast extensions of severely damaged land, a deserted place where the silhouettes of burnt trees are like ghosts, also referring to the feelings of the protagonists.

Dusty (Emmy Award winner Josh O´Connor) is a cowboy without cows and a man with no family either, his marriage with Ruby (Meghan Fahy) shatteredand the relationship with his immediate family not fluent. He is moving out, while driving his Chevrolet, he explains he will be staying somewhere else until things go back to normalto his daughter Callie-Rose (Lily LaTorre), the only one who brightens up his life, bringing something different to his melancholic days.

There is the building of a sense of community since Dusty finds a place to live in a trailer among other mobile homes and families also affected by the fires.  FEMA funds provide temporary relief, as do interactions with widow Mila (Kali Reis) and others living in the same situation.

A credible performance by the ensemble cast, specially by Josh O´Connor, Lily La Torre as the independent and curious child,  and the rare appearence of Amy Madigan as Bessie, the grandmother who puts pills into her yogurt.

A quiet story of wretchedness and hope to begin again, that refers to the  rebuilding of the title, filmed in the State of Colorado, the movie premiered at Sundance Film Festival 2025.

8/10
