I have to admit to part trepidation and part excitement when it came to watching Greyson Horst‘s debut THROUPLE about to have ts World Premiere at Boston’s Wicked Queer Film Festival. A throuple, or menage a trois as the French call it, is defined in the dictionary as “a relationship between three people characterized as balanced, committed, and non-hierarchical. “Three” + “couple” = “throuple” — and that’s called queer math. It however should not be confused with a threesome which is only about sex.
I’m not sure if this is the dream of every gay man (and woman) at sometimes in their life, but it is definitely something most of us talk and think about.
Horst’s captivating tale starts with Michael (screenwriter Michael Doshier) a gay 30-something-year-old business admin assistant who actually dreams of making music all day instead. He’s a solitary soul who may not still be a virgin but he’s been single, and rather aimless, for some time now. In his spare time, he hangs out all the time with his best girl ‘friend’ (Tristan Carter-Jones) but she is now dating her girlfriend (Jess Gabor) and so he is beginning to feel uncomfortably like a spare wheel
However, he has a chance encounter at a club one night with a gay couple (Tommy Heleringer and Stanton Plummer-Cambridge) who have an ‘open marriage’ and this is about to change everything. There is an immediate physical attraction between the three of them, but also a very definite mutual hesitancy on how they should proceed.
No spoilers here especially how it all plays out in the end, but to add to Michael’s predicament, his girlfriends announce their engagement which makes him feel alone. But Horst’s movie delightfully surprises us with the journey the story takes and keeps us totally invested in the final scene (which you will not want to miss).
Some great performances all around from a very talented cast, who started to convince a very skeptical me, that maybe Throuples could work after all. Just don’t tell my husband.
