The Edinburgh Fringe Festival is the world’s largest performance arts festival which this year is expected to host over 3500 shows/events in the course of the month of August. It is Scotland’s stunning beautifully hilly capital city steeped in history with its medieval Old Town and elegant Georgian New Town with gardens and neoclassical buildings. Looming over the city is the imposing centuries old Edinburgh Castle which used to host the coronation of Scottish ruler. (e.g. fact : Queen Margaret died here in 1093!)
It is an open-access (or “unjuried”) performing arts festival, meaning that there is no selection committee, and anyone may participate, with any type of performance. And they do, in venues as small as a hall closet to Edinburgh Playhouse, the UK’s largest all seated theatre. There are shows from the crack of down until the end of the night : its every show queen’s dream. Especially as it all includes so much queer programing.
We are particularly excited as the latest member of QUEERGURU’s wee global team is Robert Malcolm an Edinburgh native who will be reviewing his choice of shows ……watch this space. We will be adding to his coverage with previews of other shows that we think would be worth you thinking long and hard about jumping on the first British Airways to see for your self
Queerguru first met NY actor Connor Delves some two years ago when he was in London to recreate his role as Mercutio in STARCROSS about Mercutio and Tybalt. It was a fresh twist on the world’s most iconic love story, which unveiled the intrigue and passion of a forbidden romance forged in strife, stifled by circumstance and silenced by history. (See our interview HERE)
Now he is back in the UK with Piper Theatre Productions WORLD PREMIERE of the horror musical THE BLOODY BALLAD OF BETTE DAVIS. He told Queerguru that we get to step onto the set of the 1975 film “Burnt Offering,” where the legendary Bette Davis grapples with age discrimination and clashes with the unruly spirit of “New Hollywood,” embodied by Karen Black (played by Delves). As tensions rise, Davis contemplates tapping into mysterious dark powers to reclaim control and exact her revenge.
He added that we will “experience a whirlwind of physical theatre through the Merv Griffin set, the tumultuous world of Dan Curtis’s cult film, and into the alcoholic stomach of Oliver Reed. “
Written and Directed by Piper’s Artistic Director, John P. McEneny, with original music composed by Rob Parker, Connor is co-starring with Annie Meek Montgomery as Hollywood legend Bette Davis
